Strype is a software system that allows you to do things. It is designed to let you make your teaching more creative, more relevant and more fun. In theory, you can go to strype.org, and that’s all you need.

In practice, it is not quite that easy. One thing we have learned over the years is that software alone is not sufficient to enable teachers to adopt a new system. What is needed is, in fact, good and easy-to-use teaching material.

If you are a teacher, you know what I mean: Most of us do not have the time to fully evaluate what a new system can do, to experiment with it to find answers to your questions, or to write a whole set of new material from scratch.

This is what the Teachers’ Lounge tries to address: It provides a platform for discussion, to ask questions, to discuss ideas and to get help. But more importantly, it lets us share resources to make getting started with Strype much easier.

Sharing material – or getting other people to share their material – is not easy. We find that many teachers have some material, and are happy to share it in principle, but are not confident that their material is "good enough" or "worthy" to be published. They feel it needs to be polished first, but then the time to do so never comes. Producing well-developed, polished material just takes a lot of time, and many of us just do not get that time.

The way we try to address this problem here is by creating a resource model where resources are not owned by a single person, but by the community as a whole. Anyone can freely edit any resource. This model is based on trust and assumes a community of like-minded individuals.

The benefit, we hope, is that people can see value in uploading resources that are unfinished, containing just the starting point for a resource that we – as a community – may want to develop further. Maybe it's an unfinished worksheet, maybe just a single idea.

Believe me: Your colleagues and peers are very happy to see your material, even if it is not perfect. Seeing a good idea, even in imperfect form, is way better than finding nothing.

If you do not have your own resources, you may like to leave a comment for some material you have used. For other users, these comments can also be very valuable: Reading that a resource has successfully been used by several others is very useful information.

As a community, we have some people who have great new ideas. We have people who have the time to test, improve, complete and polish. We have people who tried things out and can provide useful commentary. Not many people have time to do it all. By working together, each contributing a little, our hope is that we can develop - jointly, over time - a collection of valuable material.

For us as a community this means:

• If you have material, post it.
• Don't be shy about posting unfinished material that does not yet "look good".
• The goal is to build material as a community - you do not have to do it all yourself.
• Any small contribution you can make - a correction, an addition, a comment - is valuable.
• The sum of the contributions is what makes a difference, not the size of any single contribution.
• The community is more than the sum of its members.

So we invite you to come in, take part, contribute in whichever way you can.
